On 15 June 2007, the time had finally come: BLS started operations on the new Lötschberg base route.
The new trans-Alpine link through the Lötschberg has resulted in shorter, more reliable and higher-capacity north-south connections for both passengers and freight. Trains can travel through the new tunnel at speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour, thus cutting travelling distances both within Switzerland and in Europe.
